24-Hour Economy Policy Will Make Ghana an Export-Led Economy – Sammy Gyamfi

The Communications Officer of Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, articulated the party’s commitment to ushering in a 24-hour economy as part of their agenda to reshape the country’s economic landscape. Gyamfi emphasized that this initiative aims to steer Ghana away from reliance on imports and towards becoming self-sufficient and export-oriented.

During an appearance on The Probe on JoyNews, Gyamfi elaborated on the party’s vision, emphasizing a focus on bolstering productive sectors such as agribusiness, agro-processing, modernizing agriculture, and advancing manufacturing and value addition. The goal is to create an environment conducive to sustainable jobs and economic prosperity.

Gyamfi highlighted that the conventional eight-hour work system is insufficient for achieving the level of efficiency and growth they aspire to. He stressed the need to tap into the full 24-hour cycle, stating that advanced economies capitalize on this approach to foster productivity and efficiency.

Despite criticisms from political opponents questioning the novelty and feasibility of such a plan, Gyamfi defended the proposal, citing measures and incentives, including enhancing security and safety measures, to support its implementation.

“This isn’t mere political rhetoric or a campaign slogan for votes. It’s a well-considered strategy rooted in the 40-year development plan established during the former John Mahama government in 2018,” Gyamfi affirmed.

He further emphasized that the government’s deliberate interventions aim to create an enabling environment for businesses and public institutions to operate 24/7, underscoring the transformative potential of such a shift.

The proposal, although met with skepticism from some quarters about the readiness of Ghana’s infrastructure, holds promise for reshaping the nation’s economic trajectory if implemented effectively.
