
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that 21 suspects have been identified in connection with violent incidents recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections, which resulted in 15 deaths and 40 injuries nationwide.
Providing an update on the government’s review of election security on Tuesday, November 4, the Minister revealed that four suspects are currently on bail, five are on remand, while arrest warrants have been issued for the remaining individuals.
The incidents were spread across multiple regions and constituencies. During the 2020 elections, fatalities occurred in Bono East (Techiman South), Greater Accra (Odododiodio and Ablekuma Central), Bono (Banda and Dormaa West), and the Northern Region (Savelugu). Reported injuries in these areas ranged between one and fifteen per incident.
In the 2024 elections, deaths were recorded in the Central Region (Awutu Senya East), Northern Region (Tolon), Savannah Region (Damango), Bono East (Nkoranza South), and Ashanti Region (Offinso North and Ahafo Ano South-West), with a total of six injuries reported.
The Interior Minister assured that law enforcement agencies are pursuing all suspects to ensure justice is served. He further emphasized that steps are being taken to strengthen security measures ahead of future elections to prevent a recurrence of such violent incidents.
