Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government will, starting in 2026, begin procurement of four modern helicopters, one long-range aircraft, and one medium-range aircraft to strengthen the operational efficiency of the Ghana Air Force.
Presenting the 2026 Budget on Thursday, November 13, Dr. Forson said the aircraft are expected to be delivered within four years after the procurement process is completed. He explained that the initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to modernizing security forces and enhancing national defence capabilities.
Dr. Forson highlighted the strategic role of the Ghana Air Force, which provides aerial surveillance, troop and logistics transport, air defence, maritime patrol support, disaster response, and medical evacuation operations. He noted that the ageing fleet and high maintenance demands have affected operational readiness and efficiency.
“The Ghana Air Force will be retooled. Beginning in 2026, the Government of Ghana will start procurement processes for the acquisition of four modern helicopters, one long-range, and one medium-range aircraft,” he said.
He also referenced the government’s 2020 agreement with ELBIT Systems Land Ltd for the procurement of 19 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and related defence systems, underscoring ongoing efforts to modernize the country’s military capabilities.
