A High Court in Tamale has sentenced a 19-year-old student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Salifu Nkonya Nurudeen, to life imprisonment for the murder of his colleague, Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu, over a dispute linked to a romantic relationship.

According to a report by 3FM, the incident occurred in September 2024 when a confrontation between the two students escalated, leading to the fatal stabbing of Zakiu. The court found Nurudeen guilty of both murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

During the altercation, Nurudeen stabbed Zakiu in the chest. His lifeless body was later found on campus, sparking initial suspicions of a robbery. However, Zakiu’s family ruled out the theory after realizing that none of his belongings had been taken, raising concerns that the attack was deliberate.

Delivering the ruling, the presiding judge emphasized that despite the accused’s young age, the murder was premeditated and executed with malicious intent. The court described the act as one of bad faith, resulting in the needless loss of a promising young life.

The ruling was confirmed by 3FM’s Northern Regional correspondent, Christopher Amoako, who noted that the court sought to send a strong message about violent crimes on campuses.
