A total of 118 former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general election have announced their support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential primaries.

The group, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, January 8, 2026, described Dr Bawumia as the most prepared, experienced, and winnable candidate to lead the NPP into the next general election.

According to the candidates, their endorsement followed a careful assessment of all individuals seeking the party’s flagbearership. They said Dr Bawumia’s experience, competence, vision, and leadership qualities clearly set him apart from the other aspirants.

Addressing the media, leader of the group and former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, said while several aspirants have strong backgrounds in business, governance, and policy, none measure up to Dr Bawumia when all leadership criteria are considered.

He explained that the former Vice President possesses the pedigree, experience, bold ideas, humility, compassion, and vision required to lead the party successfully into the 2028 elections.

Mr Egyapa Mercer further described Dr Bawumia as a formidable and unifying figure capable of restoring the party’s electoral fortunes.

The group also rejected claims that their endorsement was influenced by inducement, pressure, or coercion. They insisted that the decision was taken voluntarily and in what they believe is the best interest of the NPP and the country.

He stressed that individual political ambitions or pending parliamentary primaries had no bearing on their collective decision to support Dr Bawumia, urging the public to disregard any contrary claims.
