A tragic accident at Amanase near Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi highway has claimed the lives of 11 people. The crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, involving a fuel tanker (registration GR 1300-16) and a Benz Sprinter bus (registration GW 6510-23).
Preliminary police investigations indicate the driver of the fuel tanker may have dozed off, causing the vehicle to veer off its lane and collide head-on with the oncoming Sprinter bus.
The accident claimed the lives of two females and nine male adults instantly, while several others suffered life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders from the Suhum Fire Service and Police were on the scene to assist in rescue operations and manage traffic.
According to ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel, the Suhum Municipal Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, the injured victims are receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey has expressed sorrow over the incident and is visiting the hospital to assess the situation. She is expected to coordinate support for the victims, including the transfer of those in critical condition to more advanced medical facilities.
